On a personal level I got off lightly. My wife and I both had the day off, it was about 2 months after our wedding and we were having a lazy morning together. Around 1:30pm my wife called into work to check her schedule, and her boss told her to turn on the TV. My wife was asking which channel when I turned it on and saw the footage for the first time.
Of course we tried to think if we knew anyone who might have been at ground zero. No one we knew directly was, but there were some close calls.
My wife has 2 cousins who live in the D.C. area, 1 is a military contractor, but he was not at the pentagon that day. Her best friend worked for a company that had 2 executives on 1 of the planes. Several people at my work knew people who had been on the planes that left Boston.
Finally there was my sister-in-law's sister-in-law. My brother's wife, Chris, has a brother named Eddie. Eddie's wife worked in the World Trade Center. She was standing on the sidewalk, about to enter the building when the first plane hit. The reason she was outside was that she and Eddie had an argument that morning about the dry-cleaning, which caused her to miss her usual ferry. She was late for work. She an Eddie now live in her home country, Japan.
On a personal level I was lucky...
