Incase anyone has noticed that I haven’t been posting much lately; let me tell you that having a life can really cut into your internet time.
Over a week ago I went to Ohio Valley Filk Festival. I left work on Thursday with a rental car and picked up [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] and her son “TB” (The Boy). I have hear it said that all young boys seem to have ADHD, but TB proves that isn’t true. On a 13 hour car trip, each way, he said “I’m bored” only once, and he did not have any video games in the car with him. We drove as far as mid Pennsylvania Thursday, stopped in a hotel for the night, and then finished the drive Friday.
We arrived at O.V.F.F. around 3pm Friday, and checked into the hotel. I wandered around saying hi to people, giving out hugs, chatting with people I know. Around 6pm I started to wonder when
chaoticgoodchic would be arriving.
jennyblue was nice enough to let me borrow her cell phone (I should think about getting one of those someday) to call CGC. It turned out there were a couple of accidents along the way, and the traffic was making them late.
The first event of the con is the “Mad Hatter’s Tea Party” where everyone is encouraged to wear a silly hat. I decided to go all out and wear a pink flamingo hat, with a Red Floral Hawaiian Shirt, and a beach towel. When I walked in, there was CGC. She walked up to me, gave me a big hug and kiss, and then stepped back, took a look at my outfit and laughed. I won a box of ginger shortbread cookies for my outfit.
After that I changed back into normal clothes for the Pegasus Concert. It is easy to love the Pegasus Concert; it’s 3 hours of really talented people singing great songs. I will say that once again the Pegasus Committee did a great job arranging the concert to spotlight the composers, performers & songs.
At the Friday night filk circle I ended up staying up a little later than I planned, but I did get a chance to sing The Fighting D4’s eventually. (Warning when hanging out with people after a filk circle it is wise to consider if they had a nap that day while you didn’t.)
After very little sleep Saturday morning I went to breakfast with CGC and then went to the beginning singers’ workshop at 11am. I would say at this year’s con I spent more time at concerts, and less time meeting people. I still had fun, and the concerts were very good.
Saturday Evening was the Pegasus Award Banquet, where filkers dress up as grown-ups. It was a fine looking assembly. The food at the banquet was excellent. I got to see very talented people look shocked that they had won.
Saturday night I managed to perform Blows the Winter In at one circle and Astronomy lessons for Slam Poets in another, with a positive response to each.
Sunday I managed to catch up on sleep (a little) I think I got 6 hours. I got up and had a light breakfast then went to Yoga class at 11:00. It has been a while since I have done Yoga and I was terribly out of practice.
Sunday was some more concerts; I especially liked the Iron Filk competition. And as good as
almeda song was, I think I liked Maureen’s entry better.
Sunday I picked up 5 CD’s Blindsight by Blake Hodgetts, Balance by Julia Ecklar, Black Unicorn Compilation, plus 2 impulse buys: Coffee, Computers and Song by Steve Savitzky, and The Pilgrim’s Road by Aisling (which happens to include
braider). There is a broad range of sound quality on the 5 CD’s but I am happy with each purchase.
On the Sunday dinner run to Mongolian Barbecue I was privileged with the company of
chaoticgoodchic,
tollers, and Kath. The four of us had a great table (not trapped in, centrally located). Then we headed back to the dead dog.
The dead dog was fun, I got to do a reading of Mounting the Earth (written by my brother) before midnight came and the circle dynamic was changed from Chaos to Poker Chip. CGC stayed till around 1 am, I hung out till about 2am when it looked like the circle was about to break up, then sang I’m going to go back there someday. She and I found each other again at about 3am and went back to the room.
Left the con Monday morning at about 7:50am, got home at about 11:50pm. Crashed
