An afternoon in Boston
Jun. 18th, 2010 01:36 amIn order to make it to Logan Airport for a 6am flight on Friday, I decided to stay over at my brother's place Thursday.
I check my e-mail in the morning and find out that
theloriest is going to see Arlo Guthrie play with the Boston Pops at Symphony Hall. I check out their website an see that the cheap seats for the 8pm show are only $20.
I get to my brother's house at about 5pm, drop off my bags, head round the corner to the thrift store to buy a blaiser for $8, Get back on the T and head over to Symphony Hall. There were plenty of seats available (Both the Red Sox and the Celtics were playing).
It was a great concert. The Pops opened with a couple of Copeland pieces (Hoe Down & selections from Appalachian Spring), then intoduced their first guests Time for Three a string trio who performed a piece composed by Chris Brubeck written specifically for them Travels in Time for Three. They started off almost overshadowed by the orchestra, but grew over the course of the piece to finish very strong.
After intermission they introduced Arlo Guthrie. Overall it was good performance. Admittedly the first song was a little rough (with a Dylan-like vocal quality) but after he warmed up the rest went well. He was backed up by The Burns Sisters who he met on his 2005 "City of New Orleans tour".
p.s. I think I got in my walking in for the day
