Everyone did an amazing job with this episode. I first saw it in January of 2009 when it was performed live at Arisia. I was impressed, amazed and immersed with the performances & writing.

For this post I am going to do something a bit different. I am going to speculate on some of the details that were left out, and what they might mean. This is the most recent episode I have listened to, I have not heard 14 or 15 from season 2 yet. Parts of those episodes may prove me wrong, but this was/is my reaction to “Dreams”.

In this episode Shaena experiences a dream where events parallel the life of Oren. I am specifically interested in Oren’s early life. This is what I think happened.

Back on Oren’s “youth” I imagine that there was only “Natural Magic”. People had magical power through accident of birth. At this time there was a council of the most powerful mages, a council of eight.

Thanks to his gifts Oren was a member of this council, but Oren felt there must be a better way, so he searched and studied. He found an “artifact” of great power. The “artifact” gave him dreams to show him a different way of doing magic; rituals which would allow anyone with learning to do magic, not just those born to it.

He told one or two close friends on the council of the “artifact”, his dreams, and about “ritual magic”. They had noticed that Oren had been acting strange lately, and were skeptical of his ideas, so decided that they need to sneak into Oren house and check out this “artifact”.

I believe that the “Artifact” they found in Oren’s house was a limb of Doro. Their snooping allowed the burning limb to release its fire setting Oren’s house ablaze. The mages escaped, but Oren’s mother did not.

When Shawna attempted to bring Tyler back, what she got was something else, something part Tyler & part Oren. As time passed the Oren part grew stronger.

I believe that when Oren attempted to bring his mother back, what he got was something part his mother, and part Doro. As time passed the Doro part grew stronger. That is where The Winged Herald of Oren comes from.

The council wanted to know what Oren was up to, it interrogated Oren’s confidants, investigated the fire, asked about his dreams. In the end they banned him from the council. From the investigation council learned of ritual magic, and started to study what it meant. They formed schools teaching Oren’s techniques, and used this power to oppose him.

That is what I think happened, as to why Oren was never able to successfully conquer/return to Laundi. I believe he was betrayed, by the Winged Herald. Every plan Oren formed it was with the Winged Herald poisoning his mind. Why was he forever surrounded by incompetents? Because the Cult of the Mother killed off the competent claiming they were “unworthy”. The reason that history is a “wheel that keeps repeating” is because Doro/The Winged Herald is manipulating things to cause it to repeat.

I was not surprised at the end of this episode that Oren wishes to remake/destroy the world and have Shaena kill him in the process. The hint was in the story of “Father Fox” we heard in “How the Other Half Lives”. I do not believe that Oren is “Father Fox”. I believe the one who wants to destroy the world to end his own suffering is Doro, but Doro can’t do it alone, so it has been working to convince Oren & now Shaena to destroy the world.
