Performed Live January 20, 2008, runtime: 52 minutes, 05 seconds
Warning this post will contain spoilers. Normally I would say it is best to listen to the episode first, but I don’t think this episode is available for free download. You can skip my discussion of this episode, and read about Episode 12 tomorrow and be fine.
The reason for this episode was that Second Shift had the opportunity to perform on stage at Arisia. They realized that they needed to create a script that would appeal to both currant fans and new listeners. They decided that they would revisit the format of Season 1 Episode 11 Retreat, and have the characters tell stories about themselves; stories which happened before the beginning of Second Shift. This gave them new bonus content for fans, but not anything that listeners who couldn’t be at Arisia “needed” to know. It also introduced the characters to new fans, with few or no plot spoilers.
When the Arisia appearance took place, The first six episodes of Season Two had already been released, so we start with the season one opening music (by Jason Hall) and then after an introduction we hear the season two opening music (by Tiven Weinstock).
There is some repetition between episode 11 & 11b primarily to “set the scene” at the campfire so that new listeners know why they are telling each other stories.
While I love the “Boston Scavenger Hunt” (Shauna, Katherine & Mike’s college orientation), “Mr. Ham goes to University”(Fezmer being Fezmer), and “Dancing Vegetables” (Arkahn assisting Fezmer being Fezmer), I think my favorite story is “Jareth & Porec’s Prank”. I like how it introduces us to Porec. It is an especially appropriate time for us to meet him.
