Released June 25th, 2006, runtime: 31 minutes, 11 seconds

Warning: These posts will contain spoilers, it is best to listen to the episode first. You can listen to the episode Here

The very humble beginnings, the first eight minutes are spent establishing Shauna, Katherine, & Mike three college students from Boston. Things are fairly mundane but there are hints of what is to come.

We quickly establish that the title refers to Shauna, who works full time, goes to college (to make her parents proud) and watches out for her siblings. Her whole live is all about doing things for other people, so she is not quite sure how to handle it when she realizes that she has the night off with no responsibilities. Mike sees his chance and invites Shauna to go to a movie. Shauna agrees but then invites Katherine along.

It is about 10 minutes into the episode things start to get spooky, Shauna feels like she is being watched, we start to hear strange chanting, and then Shauna (seeming to respond to the chanting) says the words that change their lives, “Okay, I will help you.”

Welcome to Laundi
A place where it seems that magic works, and they never heard of Boston, or is it a dream, or some kind of trick?

We encounter Fesmer & Arkahn, then Jareth and finally Zana. Our central seven is complete.

In this first episode the writers and players do an excellent job establishing character through dialogue (there are sound effects, but no narration).

I have already talked about Shauna, so now the rest:
Katherine is an intellectual achiever and a pacifist, but not a people person
Mike is a jock with the heart of a geek, into football and RPG’s

Fesmer is the equivalent of a sorcerer, using magic based on instinct and impulse
Jareth is the equivalent of a wizard, academic and rule bound
Arkahn is hard to pin down
And Zana is a no-nonsense maternal figure

We also establish the bad guys are the Legion of Oren. When the characters split off into pairs, they “happen” to end up going with their similar counterpart, which ends up showing their differences.

Mike and Fesmer are both impulsive, but Mike is more physical
Katherine and Jareth are both intellectual, but Jareth is more practical while Katherine is more idealistic
Shauna and Arkahn are both have hidden depths

There are other great details some of which become important:
How Shauna can feel when Fesmer casts a spell on her.
Mike’s game & geek references are often funny and illustrative at the same time.
No Fesmer, it isn’t the translation spell’s fault that you have trouble understanding Mike.
How Mike is able to tackle/knock-out a Legionnaire in armor without getting hurt himself.
Even though she keeps telling herself it is a dream Shauna still offers to help Zana make dinner.
