Sep. 23rd, 2010 10:56 pmFirst we are going to to mention Mongoose by Sarah Monette and Elizabeth Bear. The story is a nicely written space opera short story with elements of Lovecraft and C.S. Lewis. The voicework is beautifully done, with each character sounding as they should. The audio editing and sound effects are smooth and support the feeling without being intrusive. You can listen over at Drabblecast Episode 170 & 171
Second I am going to mention Metamor City by Chris Lester, which is a mirror of Shadowrun (instead of a high-tech world where magic starts working, it is a magical world where technology starts working). It starts out with a couple of short stories set in Metamor City, then introduces a serial novel. I am currently up to chapter 10, but luckily I can see that I have come in late enough (Podcast started in 2007) that this character arch is complete. The stories are mature but not vulgar. As good as Chris Lester is as a writer, he is an even better sound editor. His use of backgroung noise and music is superb. His one fault is his use of metric mesurements. I can suspend disbelief for moral vampires, or people who choose to be "cursed" with the ability to switch sexes, but asking for me to accept the metric system in a fantasy setting is going to far.
