It was the best of times
In spite of some disappointments I had a great time at Arisia. I got almost enough hugs. It would be impossible for me to list everyone I hugged, but if you are reading this and I hugged you this past weekend, then know that you helped make my weekend great.
ultimatepsi did a fine job of music programming this year. We had quite a number of new people come to the filk circles which is always a treat. Some even came back the next day.
The two concerts I went to were great. The Sassafrass & Stranger Ways shared concert on Saturday was a huge hit. Stranger Ways does some trad. material and some new songs, most written by member Susan Weiner who also plays violin/fiddle.
On Sunday there was a new “geek rock” group called The Subs, Full drum set, 2 guitars and Cello. They don’t have much up online yet but you can listen to Ordinary 2nd Best Friend of the Hero at Rebecca Angel dot com (scroll down). After the concert
ladymondegreen and I double teamed them with “You should come to (Contata/6Pi-Con) this summer” (I am Filk Chair for 6Pi-Con in August).
I also enjoyed the Instrumental Jam on Monday. We had at one point: 2 violins, 1 cello, 2 guitars, 1 yuke, 1 harp, 1 recorder, 2 small Djembes, 1 Bodhran (me), and one other percussionist with Castanets, Shaker-eggs, and other various implements.
Every year at Arisia they have a Blood Drive sponsored by the Heinlein Society. While I have given blood regularly at other places, at a con has never sounded to me like a good time to do it. On the other hand, this year I was feeling healthy and well rested coming into the con, I didn’t have to be at work after the con, and I haven’t given blood in over a year, so I decided to try it. Turns out I was right; giving blood at a con is not a good idea (for me).
At 11:59pm Saturday I went to play “Midnight Cosmic Encounter” which is a tradition for me. Trell owns an original version of the game. We played until about 3:30 am. I did not win, but had fun playing. After that I played a game of San Juan till 4:45am, which allowed me to catch the T when it opened at 5am. Except the T wasn’t open at 5am, because on Sunday it opens at 6am.
Sunday I went to see Our Hideous Future which was silly but fun
Of course the biggest treats of the weekend for me were on Monday morning. 9:30 am Monday was the book signing time for
seanan_mcguire and
yuki_onna. I had been waiting since September to get An Artificial Night signed, I had even decided what I wanted her to write in it. When I got there I found out that yuki_onna was giving out Advanced Reading Copies to the first four people who were there to get her signature. I quickly rushed over to a dealer to buy a copy of The Habitation of the Blessed so that I could also get a signed ARC of The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland In A Ship Of Her Own Making.
