Goals:
To see friends
Meet some people I know through LJ
Hear some great live music by people I have only heard of
Hear some great live music by people I have never heard of
Sing
To Be among the Fen
We arrived 6:35 Friday afternoon Art,
chaoticgoodchic,
janmagic,
chirosinger,
musicmutt, and myself. We quickly checked in, dropped off our bags, picked up our badges, and changed for the “Mad Hatters Tea Party” at 7. I didn’t have a “hat” exactly, instead I wore my mask. (Should I mention that I didn’t know about the party when I packed, I brought the mask “just in case” there might be an opportunity to wear it.)
After the party was the Pegasus Nominee Concert(s). As many people before have mentioned, there were some tough choices. In Best Performer category I was undecided till I had a chance to watch Judi Miller perform live. In Best Song category I was sure I would be voting for Archetype Café until
vixyish got on stage and blew the audience away.
Afterward I hung out at the hallway filk till about 3:30am.
Saturday Morning I got up at 8:30am (‘cause I’m more likely to sleep through Christmas than sleep late at a con.) I checked my e-mail, ate breakfast, and then went to the 10am yoga class. I hadn’t done any yoga for months, so I was a bit stiff, but it was a nice warmup. At the yoga class I wore sweats. After that I went back to the room, showered (now that the room was empty) and changed into my linen shirt and kilt.
I went to the main room to see some of the concerts & 1-shots, there were some really good stuff such as I can’t read the Silmarillion, a stirring sermon from brother Tom Smith, and a clever parody of The Rose. I spent most of the afternoon there till 4pm when I went back to the room to change (again) for the Pegasus Awards Banquet. It was a nice dinner; practically everyone at the table was a new acquaintance. The awards ceremony was fun; although the only one’s surprised by the results were the winners.
After the banquet was the interfilk auction. It was a lively auction, and at times the bidding was fierce. I bid on a few things, enjoyed the attention of the interfilk wenches, and actually won a Pegasus songbook & tape. While I was at the auction I caught up with
runnerwolf (who I had been hoping to meet). After I picked up my prize, I was filled with a feeling of Ooo Shiney and went looking for someone to show it to. I encountered Judi Miller, who admired the songbook, and decided to sing one of the songs in it (I think she sang Daddies Little Girl). Which is where This picture comes from.
From there people split into 3 or 4 filk circles. I got up the courage to read one of my poems. I also got a chance to sing I’m going to go back there someday in front of
batyatoon. It is a favorite of mine, and a little bird let me know it is also a favorite of hers. If you could have seen the smile she got on her face when she realized what song it was.
I went to bed at about 4am, then got up at 9am (I caught up on sleep on the plane ride home) did the Yoga class again, although the Sunday class was smaller. One of my favorite parts of a filk con is the Jam Session. To me it is musical democracy (the majority of a well informed public will usually choose the right note.) All contributions add to the richness of the sound, most mistakes just add spice (literally).
Then the con descended on the Manchurian Wok restaurant. We fit Art,
chaoticgoodchic,
janmagic,
tollers, and myself snugly into Art’s car (not that I’m complaining). I’m guessing there were between 60 and 70 filkers who went to the restaurant. The food and deserts were very good.
Sunday at the Dead Dog I spent at least some time at 2 of the circles. I didn’t sing as much as I had planned, but it was one of the biggest dead dogs I have ever seen. I am used to about ½ of the con leaving Sunday afternoon, at this con almost everyone was leaving Monday. There was a lot of great music everywhere.
It was quite a shock to my system on Monday morning when there was no con suite. People were meeting up and saying goodbye in the restaurant and lobby. One of the hotel employees said to me, “You guys should hold this twice a year, you’re a fun group.” I quickly ate breakfast, hugged people, packed, and caught a cab heading to the airport.
